We are working for diversity
and against
discrimination and against
racism. We are also active in
Human Rights. We are here for Sami who are victim of
discrimination and racism in Sweden.
We offer free support and
free legal advice to Sami who have
been exposed for discrimination or racism.
We also offer information and
education about discrimination,
racism and diversity.
In addition, we will work with public opinion.
We also want to influence decision-makers
so that discrimination and racist laws
will
be changed to adapt to conditions in the north of Sweden.
We also want to influence decision-makers to
introduce new concepts of discrimination such as
discrimination of the Sami language.
An important part of our work
are
documenting racism and documenting
discrimination against Sami.
More about our business, you can read in our
Goals and Vision for
Verddeviessu, and in our Programmes for 2012
and 2013.
Our geographical area is primarily
the entire Sami region. But we are also carrying out activities of
Sami outside the traditional Sami area.

Verddeviessu is protesting against the State Road Company*s decision that roadsigns in Saami language could not be set up for the city of Ornskoldsvik. The city has been called for several hundred years Orrestaare in Saami language. It is also likely that the Swedish name Ornskoldsvik derived from the Saami name Orrestaare. Most of the Swedish name for places in Northern Sweden has a history from the Saami language like Skellefteå, Umeå, Luleå, Kiruna, Jokkmokk and so on. The Swedish state roadcompany says that they not found the Saami name Orrestaare in old Swedish maps. According to the Swedish state road company it does't matter that Saami arrived to the place several hundred years before the Swedish It also doesn't matter that reindeer hearding is carried out just outside the city. The most important is the names in old Swedish maps!
Norway push for ban of the Saami dress.
Februari 2010

The proposal to ban same dress in Norwegian courts comes after Norwegian Courts Service initiated a study on the use of "hijab" and "other religious and political garments" in Norwegian State. The basis is that a Saami judge with a Saami dress can be perceived as not being objective!

Road company against Saami racism
New
![]()
The road company has made
several efforts to combat racism against Saami.
In the Town of Kiruna managed
the road company very good.
The name Kiruna comes from a
Saami word "Giron" meaning
ptarmigan. The Sami language road signs Giron (Kiruna) was painted
over or destroyed over and over again for a long time. However,
the road company did not give up. As soon as
a Sámi road signs destroyed the road company put up
a new one. So, now is the Sami language road signs
untouched. At least right now ....
The road company should have
a Anti-Racist price!

A Saami woman from the Village of Storuman and alternate member of the Saami Parliament has reported the County Administrative Board in Västerbotten for discrimination. The background is that the Sami have rights to land and water under the Reindeer Husbandry Act. However, only the reindeer-herding Sami Sami may exercise the rights. When the Saami woman asked for rights to fishing she was denied. She says that Sweden is discriminating her because she is not a reindeer hearder. (Also all traditional Saami fishermen has no traditional fishing rights according to Swedish law).

The journalist Guro Saniola Bjerk wanted to make a film about what people in northern Norway like Saami or not. It was not easy. As soon as she started with the first film shots, she was threatened to be murdered. If the film was shown, she would also be killed. Moreover, few people wanted to set up publicly. Racism stops the Saami Radio
Giving up against racism?
![]()
The Norwegian Sámi Radio NRK Sámi Radio had
on its website the option to comment on news. This has meant that
news reports have become richer and deeper with more details as well
as opportunities for the public to speak up on various Saami
questions. In fact, NRK Sámi Radio has become perhaps the
largest Sami blog forum.
But, The Norwegian Sami radio stops
now every opportunity to comment on various
elements.
The reason is that more and more anti-Saami comments with racist messages against Saami.

The chairman of the
saami Schools board strongly criticizes the Swedish government in a
press release:
"The
Swedish television series "Our dark history" gives reason to reflect
on history, but also about the school policy of Sweden of today
against the Saami people. The right to learn their language, their
history and their traditions is a matter for the Swedish children,
but not for all Sami children...."
